This tag is used together with landuse=residential to mark the "type" of residential area.

Note that landuse=residential tags, including this subtag, are to be used on larger areas of land, not on individual buildings.

Usage

Tag Description TagInfo
residential=urban Residential area with multistory buildings.
residential=rural Rural, mostly undeveloped residential landuse. For the piece of land containing structures related to rural activities, such as farmhouses, stables, barns, equipment sheds, feed bunkers and the like, use landuse=farmyard instead.
residential=apartments The outline of an apartment complex. Implies residential=urban.

Note: this tag is for an apartment complex consisting of apartment buildings, car parking, landscaping, etc, on one site. Use building=apartments for a stand-alone apartment building, which may or may not form part of a larger apartment complex.

residential=detached A residential area composed mainly or exclusively of free-standing, detached buildings, which could dwell a multi-family, or single-family unit. Note: This tag may be synonymous to residential=single_family
residential=single_family Detached, single-family houses.
residential=duplex Semi-detached, 2 houses attached to each other.
residential=irregular_settlement An unplanned settlement, often found in urban areas, consisting of buildings made with light materials, often accessed with footways and paths.

Note: This tag appears to be a synonym for residential=slum and residential=informal_settlement.

residential=slum An unplanned settlement, often found in urban areas, consisting of buildings made with light materials, often accessed with footways and paths.

In several discussions within the community there has been some semi-formal consensus to strongly discourage the use of the term "slum" as it may be considered derogatory.

Consider using residential=irregular_settlement instead.

Note: This tag appears to be a synonym for residential=irregular_settlement and residential=informal_settlement.

residential=informal_settlement An unplanned settlement, often found in urban areas, consisting of buildings made with light materials, often accessed with footways and paths.

Consider using residential=irregular_settlement instead.

Note: This tag appears to be a synonym for residential=slum and residential=irregular_settlement.

residential=trailer_park A residential area consisting of prefabricated houses or static caravans (mobile homes) stationed on small lots on a long-term basis.
residential=halting_site A halting site (or a halting bay site) is purpose-built residential accommodation for travellers provided by a local municipal authority. The halting site has an individual bay for each family unit with a full range of services provided in a small structure on each bay.
residential=terrace A residential area with terraced houses
residential=block A (urban) residential "block"

Minor values / other usages

residential=* is a sub-tag used by various people to refine the meaning of landuse=residential, into finer categories.

There is no strong consensus on which categories to use in this subtag. See the taginfo list of current values used.

Proposed approaches include:

There is also residential=duplex to indicate that an urban area is filled with duplex houses.
