Proposal

This proposal aims to provide a way for mapping facilities where you can donate blood products: whole blood, plasma and/or platelets, and places where you can have stem cell samples taken.

Stem cell samples are taken to determine the tissue type of your stem cells. When the samples are analysed, your record is stored in an international database. When someone with your stem cell type is in need of transplantation, you may be contacted. This is very rare however, the probability of a match is 1/50,000. The actual transfusion could happen in a hospital, but this can't be mapped.

Rationale

There is currently no universal and approved way to map blood donation facilities. The healthcare proposals (Healthcare and Healthcare 2.0) do not cover them.

This proposal replaces Donation, a more general donation proposal.

Information on the facility

operator * The name of the organization that organises the donation, e.g. Red Cross

Compensation for donation

donation:compensation no You get no compensation for your donation.
donation:compensation yes You get a compensation for donating (use the subtags below if you know the type of compensation).
If yes, tag the type of compensation as well if you know it
You can use more than one of these to tag all possible compensations you can receive. If one is given, others are implied to be no[1].
donation:compensation:payment yes You get paid for each donation, either at the time of donation or after a certain amount of donations.
donation:compensation:vouchers yes You get one or more vouchers for every donation. Those can be either vouchers for fun rewards at the donation centre itself, or coupons for local businesses. Thank-you-vouchers.jpg

Which components of your blood can be donated

blood:whole yes/no Whether or not you can donate whole blood here Blood donation device.jpg
blood:plasma yes/no Whether or not you can donate plasma here. This is done with a plasmapheresis device. Plasmapheresis.jpg
blood:platelets yes/no Whether or not you can donate platelets here. This is done with a plateletpheresis device. Plateletpheresis 2.jpg
blood:stemcells yes/no Whether you can have blood samples taken to determine the tissue type of your stem cells. An appointment might be required.

Footnotes

  1. So donation:compensation:vouchers=yes implies donation:compensation:payment=no. There's no need to explicitly add the latter.

So you can take a gift immediately after the blood donation? I didn't think of this. Perhaps donation:compensation:gift? We can further discuss and try to add this if the proposal is accepted. —M!dgard [ talk | projects | current proposal ] 09:19, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. This proposal is fine except for the donation:compensation:* keys which will cause inconsistencies. What if donation:compensation=no and donation:compensation:payment=yes? The preceding proposal offered a simpler and better solution for this, and I don't see why this was changed to the worse. --Fkv (talk) 06:18, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
Because there are places that offer multiple types of compensation, e.g. you can choose between vouchers and a payment. This was brought up on the tagging mailing. —M!dgard [ talk | projects | current proposal ] 06:33, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
You can use semicolons. Of course this is a controversial issue, but at least there would be no inconsistencies. After all, votes only represent personal opinions, and this is mine. --Fkv (talk) 07:45, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
I sent a mail to the tagging ML, I don't get why semicolon lists are a problem either. —M!dgard [ talk | projects | current proposal ] 08:36, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
In general avoid ';' separated values whenever possible." - IMHO a new scheme with semicolons is a bad scheme.--Jojo4u (talk) 10:57, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
Semi-colons are no solution as they do not prevent you from typing a value "yes;no;maybe" or whatever invalid combination you can come up with.--Escada (talk) 13:20, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
Sounds like something iD would like to do ;) —M!dgard [ talk ] 14:31, 25 July 2015 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. -- Because of your refusal to cover, at least with an example, the tagging of several hundred Red Cross periodic donation spots --Papou (talk) 14:49, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
In the previous proposal I included those (with a donation:facility=mobile tag). Through discussion it proved to be impractical to tag those while they don't add enough value to the map. So I did not refuse to cover them, it got removed from the proposal. And I actually did add one for the previous proposal and added it to the proposal page, but obviously I removed it since then. —M!dgard [ talk ] 15:06, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
This sounds just like a "no" vote to settle a disagreement that started elsewhere. I would use the schema as above with an opening hours that indicate the exact dates and hours.--Escada (talk) 15:14, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
Then you'd have to use the exact dates and update the object continuously? Or are those always on the same dates? I always see posters around in town with the dates for the next mobile collections, so I assume they're not? Never been to one, I always go to the fixed donation centre. —M!dgard [ talk ] 15:18, 25 July 2015 (UTC)

Sorry I hate this means of discussion and wiki syntax but here we go with my available time and HTML
There were discussions related to this in other Tagging@ threads without follow-up before the vote.
My disregarded remarks were:

  • to introduce the tag precisely as:
    healthcare=blood_donation is an attribute tag that indicates that the object tag is a place where one can donate blood ... (building, room, tent, parking place where a vehicle comes ...)
  • also applying to healthcare=any (to be modified): the tag can be put on an area object (typically building), but, preferably IMHO, unless the whole area is devoted to donation, a node inside an area.  In that case, having an object tag such as a room in the node is required (you said you are happy without)
  • So that they were tagged uniformly, I suggested an example for the tagging of several hundred Red Cross periodic donation spots, typically a node:
    area:
    building=school
    contact:phone=*  (and other tags related to the school)
    ...
    node inside area:
    room=yes
    ref=12
    healthcare=blood_donation
    contact:phone  (and other tags related to blood donation such as:
    contact:email=*
    website=*
    open_hours=Tu 17:00-19:30 "days on schedule (see website)"

This last tag was discussed on the Tagging list especially for you to indicate that the donations always take place on Tuesdays at the shown hours and that the exact days have to be found at the given website URL.

As a volunteer ex-cooperator of blood donation, I thank you for this --Papou (talk) 01:19, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

Let's continue on the tagging mailing list, I agree that the wiki is not ideal for such discussions. —M!dgard [ talk ] 11:10, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
