Currently I've used railway=rail,description=funicular railway for the one at Lynmouth, but it might be useful to distinguish it in some way from a 'regular' railway? Ojw 12:42, 23 September 2007 (BST)

  • Yes, I agree. They are very distinctive as visual landmarks and are often tourist attractions. railway=funicular? MikeCollinson 19:41, 8 October 2007 (BST)
  • "railway=funicular" makes totally sense. Gets my vote --Wabba 18:14, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
  • Yes, we badly need this one in Switzerland! Gummibärli 12:44, 4 December 2007 (MET)
  • We have some in germany as well, most often climbing a mountain and having no connection to the rest of the railway system. While I'm fine with rendering them the same as railway=rail, I'd appreciate a tag to map them seperately. SlowRider 21:15, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
  • Could this and rack railway be generalized into railway=incline? --Hawke 17:53, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
  • I disagree with this proposal. How we should tag funicular tram or funicular subway?( for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opicina_Tramway or many glacier subways). So I propose following tagging scheme for all incline railways types:
railway=rail | light_rail | tram | subway ...
rack = no (default) | yes | {more specific type} (e.g. Riggenbach, Abt ...)
funicular ( or cable? ) = no | yes
(or maybe traction:rack, traction:funicular) -Vrabcak 09:26, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
  • I support adding a tagging schema for funicular railways (need one to map the funicular from the Aare to the Bundeshaus in Bern). I vote for
railway=funicular
It's simple and clear enough. A subway funicular would be a
railway=funicular, tunnel=yes
  • I agree. We have plenty of them in Switzerland. At least 2 of them are already tagged in this way. Rendering as a narrow gauge railway is OK for me.
