Proposal

This proposal would introduce a new tag, pedagogy=* to denote the educational theory of an element, especially schools and kindergartens.

Rationale

Many institutions adhere to pedagogical philosophies that differ from mainstream schooling in their local area. Schools and kindergartens which follow a particular pedagogy are often sought after by parents and prospective students. Different entities and institutions may apply a pedagogical theory, and a dedicated key would allow for flexibility of application (similar to religion=*).

Tagging

The key is applied to a node, area or relation which may hold a pedagogical philosophy, such as amenity=school, amenity=kindergarten, amenity=college, amenity=childcare, and so on.

Many major pedagogical approaches are listed below, but it should not be considered exhaustive. For schools that use a blended pedagogical approach (such as a reform school which uses parts of multiple pedagogies), the hybrid value should be used.

Tag Possible Values Description
pedagogy=* hybrid A blended, bespoke, or otherwise uncategorisable alternative education model.
mainstream An unspecified mainstream educational model specific to the local area. Is not required in most cases, as it is assumed to be the "default" approach.
outdoor For entities that adhere to the philosophy of outdoor education.
media For entities that focus on media and media literacy.
freinet For entities that are associated with the Freinet Modern School Movement.
montessori For entities that adhere to the philosophy of the Montessori education system.
reggio_emilia For entities that adhere to the Reggio Emilia approach.
sudbury For entities that adhere to the Sudbury school system.
waldorf For entities that adhere to the philosophy of the Waldorf education (aka Steiner education) system.
user defined For any other named pedagogical philosophy

  • I abstain from voting but have comments I have comments but abstain from voting on this proposal. I don't understand whether pedagogy=media is an education philosophy. --- Kovposch (talk) 10:58, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
Not the subject of the proposal. Would you also not tag certain religions because you don't believe in what they believe in? B-unicycling (talk) 12:24, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
Yes, it is. Media looks more of a specialization or focus of the school. Religion is clear enough. Furthermore you can discuss what pedagogy is used for media and media literacy. Media itself doesn't seem to be a pedagogy. --- Kovposch (talk) 15:11, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
I am also confused about that particular value, and would welcome clarification from the proponent about what it means. --Waldyrious (talk) 15:38, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
Hi Kovposch. Media pedagogy was added following feedback on the community page, but it was difficult to find details about it actually is. From my understanding there is a difference between "media literacy" education and "media pedagogy" education. Media Pedagogy includes aspects of media literacy, critical thinking and independent inquiry and applies it to every subject. I'm not an expert in this at all, though; the best description of the differences I was able to find was here. I'm keen to hear if you have another perspective. Diacritic (talk) 20:14, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
Following the exchange here, which clarified my understanding of this value, I would suggest the "media" value to be dropped from the proposal. --Waldyrious (talk) 07:50, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

  • I abstain from voting but have comments I have comments but abstain from voting on this proposal. some values are clear but I question the usefulness of hybrid and mainstream and for the former would suggest that there’s an additional tag like pedagogy:hybrid=<list of values>—Dieterdreist (talk) 15:04, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
Note that sometimes the school itself doesn't define its pedagogy in terms of existing ones, but either states they are "inspired by" philosophy A or B, or even just espouse an alternative model without explicitly naming it. So a plain "hybrid" value would be useful without a mandatory qualifier, IMO. (As for the latter case, perhaps it could be covered with a "bespoke"/"custom"/"other" value.) --Waldyrious (talk) 15:38, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
Hi Dieterdreist, as Waldyrious described, the "hybrid" value is intended to capture schools which have bespoke pedagogies formed using concepts from multiple different pedagogical approaches. Many schools don't advertise which pedagogies have been used to craft their own model, and the content can be so difficult to define that a pedagogy:hybrid would be impractical to map. • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. As the proposal process informs to add title == External discussions == to the proposal. This is missing here, e.g. for talk: https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/key-pedagogy-proposal (seems some of the offers there didn't appear) --MalgiK (talk) 16:16, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
Hi MalgiK. I apologise, I created the external discussion after drafting the proposal initially and neglected to add it. Diacritic (talk) 20:14, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. I had put some time into considering if I wanted to vote for this or not since I similar hang ups to Dieterdreist. But at the end of the day I couldn't really figure out what a good alternative to this tag is if it doesn't get approved. So "shrug", I guess. Things can always be clarified later if need be. • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. While I support the general idea of this proposal, the current list of values should not be approved. "Hybrid" and "media" are confusing and poorly defined values which should not be included, and "mainstream" is also not necessary - and since it would vary in meaning based on location it would not be helpful. Also, the list of options seems to be limited to types of pedagogy common in Western Europe and North America, but would be ideal to talk to other communities about other options that could be included, to make sure this will work in other parts of the world. --Jeisenbe (talk) 19:52, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
