natural=tree

Status: imported

A tag used almost exclusively to describe the maturity of a tree. Despite the name of this key, it is not used to tag the age of an object (e.g., in years) and other keys should instead be used for this purpose.

Usage and common values

As of April 2022, over 99.6% of uses of this tag are associated with the natural=tree tag. This appears to be the result of a single data import project.

The following are commonly used values:

This table is auto-generated. See Template:Taglist for a documentation on it.

Note that, although well-used, most of these values are subjective and may need updating over time. It is perhaps better to instead use the start_date=* key to describe when the tree was planted or started growing, if known.

When not to use

  • Do not use to describe the age (in years) of an object - as this will need constant updating. Instead, allow this to be inferred using start_date.
  • Do not use to describe the historical era in which an object was created. Instead, use historic:civilization (and the more refined historic:period and historic:era tags if known).
  • Do not use to describe the suitable age range for users/customers of a feature or amenity (e.g., leisure=playground). Instead, use the min_age and max_age keys as appropriate.
