Tag used

  • in cases where POI such as shop or museum and building were mapped as one object despite being two different objects, even with different names (violating One feature, one OSM element). In such cases this objects should be rather mapped as two separate objects.
  • Used also instead of name=* for some buildings, despite having meaning of name=*. In such cases using simply name=* is preferable.
  • Instead of addr:housename=* - addr:housename=* can and should be used if building name is part of the address
  • ""conceptual" name of building assigned by architects, urban planers or architetual writers."[1]
  • For inscriptions - use inscription=* for that

Note that building:name=* is used not only for building names and cannot be easily moved to name=* without local knowledge. If object is tagged as say

with no other tags it is not safe to move its value to name=*[1]
