October 2014 server maintenance

On 26th October from 11:00 to 12:30 we had a planned maintenance window, in which some core OpenStreetMap services were unavailable. Sysadmins were performing a database swap.

This work was completed successfully although the database outage lasted a little longer than expected ([1])

Old information

The main database (and API) will be offline and unavailable for this 1 hour 30 minutes period. Actual service times may vary.

What is affected?

All DB dependent services, including the API.

The API will be offline, meaning you will not be able to use OpenStreetMap editors to read data or make changes to the map data (they use the API). You will not be able to download data during the full outage. You may be able to use JOSM to download some data ahead of time to edit offline, however this is for advanced users only, since you will need to take care with conflict resolution when saving your changes after the API comes back online. The chances of this being problematic depend on where you are editing. In general, it is recommended to cease editing until you can upload. If you need to use JOSM during the downtime, it is advised to launch it in offline mode: java -jar josm-tested.jar --offline=osm_api.

The OpenStreetMap website will show maps, however you will not be able to view other areas of the site, such as diary entries or GPX traces. You will not be able to see your message inbox, and you will not be able to login.

Planet.osm downloads will remain available, but diffs will not be generated during the outage (they would be empty anyway!) External services using diffs may be affected by the read-only period.

You may not be able to log in to the following systems during the full outage

This is to the login mechanism linked to your OpenStreetMap login.

Unaffected

The plan is to keep the map view on the website available, including the ability to pan around, link to the map. Map search. Export functions should remain unaffected, except the OSM XML export (which is an API operation)

Nominatim servers will continue as normal, powering searches on the front page map, and the nominatim API.

The tile server will continue to serve tiles to all other applications and websites during the work. No work is planned for the 'standard' OpenStreetMap tile server. Maps will continue to display on other websites (No planned downtime, but note that we do not guarantee availability of the tile server even in normal circumstances. See Tile usage policy) Likewise other 3rd party tile providers will be unaffected.

Also unaffected:

Unforeseen problems

As mentioned, actual service times may vary within the service window described above. In the event of unforeseen problems in the maintenance work, downtime may extend beyond these times, or the plan may change.
