Editing events lists - Calendar Templates

Template:Calendar is the main place where events are listed

Template:Calendar2 is just a wrapper for it.

The following seem to exist, for use in the calendar:

  • {{Cal|speaking}}
  • {{Cal|social}}
  • {{Cal|mapevent}}

Duplicate data

Should the "Events" section be deleted, now that information is stored in Template:Calendar? Ojw 17:25, 15 September 2006 (BST) Should it also be deleted because it is now past, rather than future? Rw 17:30, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Yeah I've just blown away that old 'Events' section. Now all events will need to be listed in 'Template:Calendar'. If someone wanted to describe an event in more detail, I guess they could create a #section on this page again, but it seems to be more common to just create new wiki pages for event details, or sections on project city pages. -- Harry Wood 13:44, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

rename

how about renaming this, both on the article header and sidebar as 'Planned events' or somesuch, as 'Current events' seems a little odd? just a matter of moving a page on here and editing a mediawiki special message... Morwen 19:53, 14 May 2007 (BST)

I agree. 'Current' seems to suggest that they are all upcoming in the next week or something, although it's not really a huge problem.
But then 'Planned Events' might imply that they are all only in the planning stage.
I'd suggest 'Upcoming Events'
If we are looking at modifying the sidebar (see MediaWiki talk:Sidebar) then we could think about some of the other naming too. e.g. see OpenStreetMap talk:Community Portal -- Harry Wood 11:08, 15 May 2007 (BST)

Google calendar?

Google calendar gives an error saying it has trouble parsing http://www.openstreetmap.org.uk/events.ics ? Ojw 10:01, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

It looks like there are a few Google Calendars (when searching 'OpenStreetMap' most are for area specific. On the one Calendar stated 'OpenStreetMap' in the description its says 'Europe Mostly' That might be misleading, as its not yet that big if a calendar... nothing is in it. It would be nice to show ALL the events across the board in 1 calendar. --acrosscanadatrails 22:17, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Mini Flags

What do you think about adding Mini Flags to this calendar to help illustrate the country the event is held in? ex. Flag of the United States.svg--Nickvet419 05:55, 23 February 2009 (UTC) {{miniflag|United States}} Template:Miniflag

Could be good. Your Template:miniflag might not be such a good idea though. Part of the reason the wiki is performing badly is the use of templates everywhere. Consider using an image directly? On the other hand the additional volume of wiki syntax in Template:Calendar is also a problem. Really we need to cut down on the number of events we list on the Main Page somehow. -- Harry Wood 09:48, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
I figure since OSM is an international comunity it would be a little easier to find local events if there were flags. The template is just an easy way to post the flag. I guess it would be just as simple to use an immage link.--Nickvet419 Flag of United States 10:33, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Event Map

A nice feature would be to have a some kind of event map. This way people would see where in their region events are taking place. The events could even show up in the official map, so people would get in touch easier with the community.

I played around with openlayers and did some perl hacking to make an example of how this could look like: [1]. I also made a Blog entry with some details [2]

Beer And Germany

Don't anyone else think that German drinking parties should go in a separate list? It is really hard getting the whole picture with such a lot of beers around :) --Zverik 08:56, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

I'd like to remove the reference to "beer" in social events, because we should not promote alcohol drinking in a page suitable for children (also because various communities prohibit alcoholic beverages). Any problem if we change that to a "coffea cup" (or tea cup) for just informal meetings of volunteers in a common place ?
E.g. this one: https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/creating-a-coffee-cup-with-inkscape--vector-30 (the last one in the article showing how it is drawn and enhanced), or similar freely reusable cliparts (see https://www.google.fr/search?tbs=sur:fc&tbm=isch&q=coffee+cup+image&chips=q:coffee+cup+image,online_chips:clipart&sa=X for a collection, remove those images with trademarks/logos or with text, or those showing too many items as it should render well as small icons, possibly avoid photographic compositions is they are not enough contrasted).
