Isn't this landuse=retail instead?

The description is a collection of shops around a parking lot. These seem to usually be mapped as individual shop=* features with appropriate values (shop=clothes, amenity=fast_food, shop=hardware etc) and then the whole area has landuse=retail with the name of the shopping centre, at least in the areas I have seen mapped. --Jeisenbe (talk) 06:04, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

I would also likely tag it this way (or maybe as shop=mall), I was completely unaware that this tag exists Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 08:50, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Similar to =mall, the =shopping_centre is a named object. I agree that one way to map it is to make a landuse=retail area and simply name it, but that is not how we handle other named features (malls, shops, homes, etc).

Although we can expect many landuse=Retail areas might be named, we cannot assume it is a =shopping_centre merely because it encloses other shop=tags. Simply putting name=FooBar Mall doesn’t mean anything to OSM. Same with =shopping_centres. I do agree than they are the lowest and smallest form of retail named structures that have other retail POIs inside, but they still should be properly mapped as a shopping center. Many shopping centres (even the smallest, most inconsequential structures) are often named and signed.

Relying on the landuse tag to denote actual usage sounds bad. I use it for area type and type alone. Javbw (talk) 07:26, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Over 24% (almost 1 in 4) landuse=retail features has a name tag, so most mappers do not have any issues with adding a name to that feature. Similarly landuse=residential is used for named complexes of apartments (where an area with several different buildings has one name), and landuse=industrial is used for named industrial parks or complexes.--Jeisenbe (talk) 07:31, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
landuse=* areas may have names - I have seen such use for residential complexes, factories, retail areas and so on - and it seems fine to me Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 08:51, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

JOSM lists this as "deprecated"

JOSM complains that this tag is deprecated and suggests to use shop=mall instead. --Richlv (talk) 10:57, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
