Key:highway mistakes

What kind of mistakes are on that page? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 11:58, 3 January 2020 (UTC)

To me [[access]] in the KeyDescriptions seemed to be wrong (instead {{Tag|access}}). But a closer look let me understand, meant was a link to the general description of access (including all the keys e.g. vehicle, foot,...), not only the literal key access. Anyhow Access is redirected to Key:access. So there is no difference actually.
And there are variances in permissibility on areas between wiki an data items.
By the way: Is there a common agreement with wether to keep the entries to KeyDescriptions in the wiki or to remove them and manage them on data items site? At the time they are double with variances sometimes. In my experience taginfo has still working fine after removing entries from wiki site. rgds --Chris2map (talk) 15:33, 3 January 2020 (UTC)
In general, it seems to me that there is no clear support for deleting template parameters from the Wiki. There was a clear support for adding data items, but it was never clearly proposed or discussed what is supposed to happen with template parameters. There may be a support for deleting parameters from translated pages, you may want to contact local community (if it exists). I know that some people want to delete parameters from templates and I am fine deleting them from translation pages, as long as data items are kept in sync with the main version of documentation. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 14:13, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
OK, thanks for the note. I'm going to handle it like that and keep the template parameters. --Chris2map (talk) 16:55, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

Proposed to delete DE:Tag:highway=residential;unclassified OOjs UI icon check-constructive.svg

I can see no use of the page DE:Tag:highway=residential;unclassified back to 2014 and even no enlightening evidence, so I propose to delete it. With taginfo there can be found 1 use of highway=residential;unclassified in Bangladesh way 776645449 dated 2020-02-27. That should be highway=service according to aerial imagery. I can't recognize any relation between the tagged way and the wiki-page. So I still like to propose the deletion. Regards --Chris2map (talk) 13:47, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

I see. Sorry, I should have checked this case more in detail. I simply assumed a relation, but that looks very unlikely given these circumstances. --Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 13:41, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

Under_construction and Inuse: two templates

Hello, I wish to consult you why two templates employ different coding which notifies similar situation that somebody is working on a page: it is related to your revert that JA template is missing for Under construction. IMHO I translated both templates, and there exists tl:JA:Under_construction. Am I missing something?

I have a problem with the Under_construction template. I wish it had the same clever coding as you have introduced for template:Inuse. Do you advise me to consult anywhere for concensus that those two templates employ the pattern of coding we now are benefitted with template:Inuse?

Kindly consider guiding me, as I am not quite familiar with coding but very keen to support translation drive on OSM. Cheers, --Omotecho (talk) 00:21, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

Hello! First, these are two long existing templates. I wasn't involved with the creation. I just have added strings for translations and a rudimentary documentation. - My revert was meant to the missing translation string in Japanese within the template Under construction. I couldn't find such. Within template In use it is fine. Coding is the same in both templates. Apparently you worked in a separate JA: version of the template. You can use the normal version and add the translation like within the template In use. Link: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Under_construction&action=edit - Regarding usage of the two templates: I don't know the intentions but I would use In use only in cases if edit is live and takes about minutes or few hours. In other cases for longer edits I would prefer Under construction. Hopefully I could clear it a bit. Cheers -- Chris2map (talk) 12:53, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

Very kind of you replying me, and I have clearer idea about those two templates. The only thing which still puzzles me is that "Inuse" template shows message in Japanese, while "Under construction" shows English message only. Does the difference relate to any error I might have added? It looks to me the only change between those two templates is that "Under construction" has a parameter not in "Inuse". I guess that is how things work maybe, and if you would point me to any hint as above, I would appreciate to learn.
A side note. Actually, I wish to use "Under construction" template to avoid editing conflict on, for example, a list-type page where JA has many blank sub-sections lacking translation, and during when two/three of editors share translating the page, we wish to tell other editors to stand by till the template is lifted or come see the talk page. Cheers, Omotecho (talk) 22:24, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
{{Template:Under construction}} has no translation in JA yet. You have to add the translation by | ja = 日本語訳は以下の通りです。 in the English template code: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Under_construction&action=edit
You can use Template:Under construction or you might have a look at {{Template:Translation not complete}}. There you can add a username to show that someone cares about the completion, e.g. {{Translation not complete|user=Omotecho}} -- Cheers, Chris2map (talk) 16:55, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
Yes, I understood that it would be something like:
::: | ja = <!-- 日本語訳は以下の通りです。-->この記事は大がかりな再編もしくは拡張中{{#if:{{{notready|}}}|のため、しばらくご利用はお控えください}}。
So I am going to put tl:translation not complete and sign on Template:JA:Under construction. Thank you so much for your crisp guidance. Cheers, Omotecho (talk) 20:19, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
I think you got me wrong on one point. I wanted to propose to use the {{Translation not complete}} on your projects that you mentioned (list-type page), not on the template page (though you can use it if you want to). --Chris2map (talk) 20:46, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

Definitely not agree! I make many edits but it is not my private wiki or something :) If I do things in way suggesting that I would be angry that others are also editing, let me know how can I change this Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 13:04, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
Hi Mateusz, I didn't mean to express that I have this impression of you. I just wanted to say that I didn't mean to know things better. All good! Yours, Chris / Chris2map (talk) 13:16, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

--Chris2map (talk) 21:46, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

Use of images outside of the Wiki

@Tigerfell: Yes, I didn't think about and check forum and OSM diaries. Thank you for drawing my attention to this. - I now searched on forum: Is it sufficient to search the file name in the search function [2]? Search gives no hit. - Is there a search function for diaries? --Chris2map (talk) 21:15, 29 December 2021 (UTC)

I somehow forgot to answer. It seems that the forum search finds file names. There is no search for the diaries. You can use search engines and limit their results for https://www.openstreetmap.org/diary example with duckduckgo.com. Then you get the RSS feeds which you can open in a text editor. That does not seem to be too comfortable... :-( I remember that I have heard of some search engine that can find the web pages using a certain image but I can not recall the name or how to get there. --Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 09:32, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
No problem! A lot action at the moment! Thanks for the answer. I'll try to get on with it at the next opportunity. --Chris2map (talk) 19:31, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

Legal requirements to images or media files

> Main topic: Category:Media without a license

Several uploads to the Wiki still have been done without specifying the license and many images are in use missing an adequate license.

On search how to put things better I looked for a guide or at least an annotation, what has to be respected with uploading and using media like images in the Wiki. But I cannot find such!

  • There is one short and unclear note at Wiki_Help. And that page not even is linked at mainpage or main help page Get_help. (Another issue itself.)
  • Even at the Special:Upload page there are several hints but there is no given help what licenses must or can used basically.

IMHO that way we cannot expect "correct" use of media in the Wiki. I myself have my difficulties with seeing what is right now in view of (using) uploads.

I think an upload or media guideline must be created and put at Wiki_guidelines. And the Wiki guidelines must be directly linked at Get_help and at Special:Upload.

Question: Did I miss or overlook a description or guide in terms of licenses with images at the Wiki and can anyone provide a link?

I got to this topic due to the ongoing efforts of @Mateusz Konieczny:, see e.g. Talk:Wiki#Copyright_violations.

I would really appreciate if more users could help hereby. --Regards, Chris2map (talk) 12:50, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

It may be a good idea to post it on Talk:Wiki. In general I agree with this Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 18:41, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

License of aerial imagery such as Maxar

Hey, I just saw that you did the licensing on the screenshot I linked here (but on the page here in the gallery there are 2 more images using Maxar) and I forgot the include the license thing. Now I read the Maxar part of the licensing (I wasn't thorough about it before uploaded it), well I think I should not have uploaded the images because of the license, that you cannot download the imagery nor use it for other purposes (By using our imagery in the OSM editor, you understand and agree that you may only use our imagery to trace, and validate edits that must be contributed back to OSM. You cannot download our imagery or use our imagery for any other purpose.[maxar 1]). Or maybe am I wrong here? I mean, I just wanted to demonstrate that I was doing some hard work as tracing it and not just "meh i'm playing like a lazy kid".
Sorry, just this question got into my mind. If it's the thing, then I would like to get them to delete, or if it fits the thing that "yes, you're using it in an editor, and you're not doing it for any other purpose than that", then leave it as is.
It's kinda a hassle to get whether or not should I do something and I usually do things before thinking (I don't know why). But yeah, if you cleared the thing for me, it would be awesome, and I won't have to worry about stuff. Just the weird thing is that this is out on OSM wiki for a year and nobody said a word about it.
And what happens, when I want to put it in my presentation to show people how to trace in OSM (eg. local online OSM event), that is still a problem? I never got into this so if any of you clarified the thing, it would be good. I know, there is the fair use of things and here also I only demonstrated tracing so I didn't use it for other things, but just in case. Really thanks for the answer in advance. - Regards, Ottwiz (talk) 21:36, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
Update: I got an answer from Minh Nguyen and from Kathleen Lu and basically this can be used under fair use so there's no such problem with it. Ottwiz (talk) 00:30, 25 December 2021 (UTC)
@Ottwiz: - note that fair use may not really apply in such case, and it is not yet decided whether and in which cases OSM Wiki should allow fair use. See https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Talk:Wiki#Designing_policy_for_handling_files_without_clear_license and especially "Questions" section. Is there some reason why you are unable or unwilling to release it under open license like https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/ ? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 08:15, 25 December 2021 (UTC)
@Mateusz Konieczny: In my case of my presentations, it's usually released under CC-BY-SA 4.0 open license, and as Kathleen told me (since she is a member of LWG), it should be the least concern for Maxar, as citing @Minh Nguyen:, it can be a problem if the imagery itself is distributed standalone, but until while it is used for demonstrating in JOSM editor (or in presentations, just a small extract with OSM data on), it should not be a problem, "de minimis", from my conversations.
Technically yes, on the wiki this "fair use" thing in general is not supposed to be there as Minh told the same too. Since there is no delete flag on the image, it means it can stay on the wiki if it has the correct licensing, if I'm correct. Ottwiz (talk) 09:25, 25 December 2021 (UTC)
@Ottwiz: Hey - I can't add anything more to the use of Maxar, but the assessments you received from Minh Nguyen and Kathleen Lu would be ok for me. - One thing I noticed: The license template {{GPL}} used for JOSM screenshot, includes the template {{Free media}} that adds Category:All free media to the file. This may not be desirable for images that contain Maxar content. I would create a template for JOSM screenshots in combination with imagery that uses own box syntax for GPL and doesn't add the Category:All free media. Am I on the right track with this? --Chris2map (talk) 18:42, 25 December 2021 (UTC)
@Chris2map: I think yes, that's kind of a good thing, but I think Mateusz knows the deal better on the templates, if that was the thing, I would have that added on those images. Ottwiz (talk) 18:49, 25 December 2021 (UTC)

License templates for JOSM screenshots

I made a draft for a Template:JOSM screenshot with imagery in {{Sandbox}} that doesn't use {{Free media}} and allows to specify different imageries, e.g. Maxar image or Bing image: {{JOSM screenshot with imagery|{{Maxar image}}}} or {{JOSM screenshot with imagery|{{Bing image}}}}
(https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Sandbox&oldid=2235738) --Chris2map (talk) 20:36, 25 December 2021 (UTC)
{{JOSM screenshot with imagery}} is exactly what I planned to create to complement {{JOSM screenshot without imagery}}. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Sandbox&oldid=2235738 looks great to me - do you want to create this new template? "I think Mateusz knows the deal better on the templates" - not really :) Every time I need to look at Mediawiki documentation pages Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 10:08, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
@Mateusz Konieczny: I'm pleased about that and going to create the template! Chris2map (talk) 10:30, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
New template has been created: {{JOSM screenshot with imagery}} --Chris2map (talk) 11:13, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
If I use {{JOSM screenshot with imagery}} with the Carto images like {{JOSM screenshot with imagery|{{OSM Carto screenshot}}}} as suggested by Mateusz Konieczny at Talk:Wiki#OSM_Carto_categories the information about the OSM-source will be shown twice. Could this be corrected? Unfortunately I don't know the syntax of the templates so I'm not able to do this. --Segubi (talk) 23:17, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
In principle some extra parameter could be added, but I would simply not worry too much about this kind of duplication. Note also case of raw OSM data also being present on image Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 07:11, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
@Segubi: Thanks for pointing to that! As Mateusz has already replied, better twice than zero, and there is overlaying OSM data on top of the map tiles. You can go on. We have to find advancement within the templates. --Chris2map (talk) 14:26, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

About GB 917

The files which I uploaded isn't completely from the GB 5768, is partly from GB 917 (2017 version) and other local provincial standards. I think the template isn't proper and thorough. Herman Lee Zh (talk) 14:34, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Setting the licence correctly for a (trivial) derivative work on dual-licenced image

I am trying to set the licence correctly on a file I uploaded, after you pointed out the licence terms were missing.

Would you please be so kind as to have a look at it (Footway-crossing.jpg). I want to do it right and it is not an easy case.

As I mentioned in the description, the background image comes from a local government website, under their own open data licence that claims to be compatible with both CC-BY 2.0 and ODC-BY. I make some trivial drawings on top of that. If it were just for my part, it would be CC0. I bet it should be CC-BY 2.0 or ODC-BY for the whole derivative work.

If none of this is satisfactory, I can delete the picture completely. After all, it was only used to illustrate a point in a discussion. A picture is worth a thousand words, but probably not a legal hassle. Bxl-forever (talk) 20:09, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

Hey, first of all, thank you for your efforts. That licensing quest is quite exhausting. - I included the attribution within the CC-by template. To me it should be fine now. Anything more would be close to nitpicking. --Chris2map (talk) 06:49, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
@Bxl-forever: It looks 100% fine to me, and there is enough of explanation so templating change (if needed) should be doable without bothering you Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 12:32, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

Deine Änderung auf Item:Q4679

Hey Chris2map!

--MalgiK (talk) 20:16, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

Category:ES:Namespaces translation

@Dcapillae and Jemily1: Hi! Would it be OK to rename the category ES:Espacio de nombres into ES:Espacios de nombres, so plural? I recognized it when working on categorization with template Template:Description for prefix keys. For this I use MediaWiki:Namespaces/es to find and link the category translation. The translation there is in plural. Also the other translations of Category:Namespaces are in plural. My current solution for automated categorization of prefix keys in "Namespaces" only works for other languages if the name of the category matches the translation string in MediaWiki:Namespaces/... --Chris2map (talk) 21:47, 13 December 2022 (UTC)

Group categories that are not automatically added

In this changeset I had to manually add the category Category:ES:Tag descriptions for group "education", as in the previous changeset the category was not added automatically. However, in the spanish key descriptions pages the category is added automatically. The group category is also added automatically on the English pages

I have been adding group categories manually for a long time, and I would like to be able to add them automatically.

Can you fix this?

Thanks in advance --Jemily1 (talk) 16:01, 31 December 2022 (UTC)

The problem was in Template:DescriptionCategoriesLang: Translation there didn't match the actual naming of the category. - It will take some time till system recategorizes the pages, or manual null edits. Hppynwyear, Chris2map (talk) 17:19, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

building=apartments

How would building=apartments (Q6069) be applicable to relations? Andrew (talk) 12:21, 19 August 2023 (UTC)

There is usage with Relation:building. E.g. relation 13902398 --Chris2map (talk) 12:26, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
@Wynndale: I did more research about the usage of building=* with building relations and I think you're right in questioning that usage. In common you will put the building=* tag on the closed-way element of the building outline and that would be sufficient. There are cases with a building=* tag on a building relation but these are less a common practice. So I set onRelation=no again. --Chris2map (talk) 13:52, 19 August 2023 (UTC)

Key bridge on areas

--Chris2map (talk) 15:30, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

ChangesetKey

It would be better to move old page, and delete redirect. Is ChangesetKey:imagery_used copy of old page contents? If yes, then deleting it and moving older existing page is needed to keep history (for licensing reasons) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 13:05, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

I'm also trying to figure out what would be better. At the moment I would say that we should keep the "old" key or tag pages, since there is still significant use of the respective keys on objects (elements) and we can set the status deprecated on these "old" pages (as well as in the associated data items). The "old" pages would then be a kind of historical documentation and the explanation that these are no longer common practice, with a reference to the changeset tags and new changeset key and tag pages. Regarding the data items, I also wanted to ask the question. I think new data items would also be appropriate there in order not to disturb existing relationships and uses (e.g. in the iD editor for the attributes applied to elements). --Chris2map (talk) 16:05, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
But pages primarily describe actual use: I would move them and create brand new page "deprecated on objects, for use on changesets see XYZ". Moving page preserves history and does not change what is shown to users in the end Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 19:36, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
OK, so you would move Key:imagery_used to ChangesetKey:imagery_used without redirect and change content of Key:imagery_used into the deprecation description, right? --Chris2map (talk) 19:45, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
@Mateusz Konieczny: I declined to delete ChangesetKey:imagery_used. Recent edits to Key:imagery_used make clear that it's likely to remain as a separate article, at least until it disappears from the database. As long as neither page becomes a redirect, there isn't a straightforward way to selectively transfer one page's history to another. If at some point in the future we decide to relegate the key description to a section of the changeset key description, then Special:MergeHistory would be perfect for consolidating the history on ChangesetKey:imagery_used and turning Key:imagery_used into a redirect. I don't think there's any licensing issue as long as the pages remain on this wiki (which the license considers a single work), but if you want, you can enumerate the authors on the talk page to give them credit. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 08:43, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
