Mapping laws and regulations

The Department of Science and Technology under the Government of India have framed various policies to promote and regulate mapping of India over the years. As of February 2021, mapmaking in India has been largely liberalized to promote the use of geospatial data for job creation and economic growth.

Current policy

The approved guidelines for geospatial data (2021) and draft national geospatial policy (2021) cover how geospatial data of India can be collected and outlines the restrictions on its use.

  • There is no formal approval needed for collection, generation, preparation, dissemination, storage, publication, updating and/or digitization of Geospatial Data and Maps within the territory of India if users can self certify their adherence to the published guidelines.
  • Features and attributes mentioned in the published list of negaative attributes (2021) are restricted from being mapped with the exception if they are publicly identifiable on sign boards
  • Geospatial data collected by foreign entities on foreign servers must not exceed on site accuracy of more than 1m (horizontal) and 3m (vertical)
  • Street view survey photographs can only be collected by Indian entities and stored on Indian servers
  • For political maps of India, the external boundary must match the ones published by Survey of India
