What is OSM Place Search Logger

OSM Place Search Logger is a tool used to evaluate the quality of search results provided by the Nominatim geocoder.

Use Cases

OSM Place Search Logger can be used

• when a searched address or POI is (supposedly) not found.
• when an address is found but is not prioritised correctly (e.g. when it does not come first in the list).

No use case for this tool are for example the following cases:

• finding and displaying all restaurants in Zurich
• finding places far away from streets

How do I use it?

When you enter a search term in the search bar and click on the magnifying glass (or press return), up to 20 potentially fitting search results will appear in the sidebar, which will be ordered in part based on the position of the map (viewbox). To view the location of a result, click on it in the sidebar to view it on the map. This helps you decide whether it's the correct result.

This tool allows you to view the OSM object: To view the node, way or relation in Nominatim, click on its name in the sidebar. To view the object in OpenStreetMap, select a result and then click the link on the popup of the map.

If you found what you were looking for, you can click either on `LOG ENTRY AS SOLUTION` or on `SUBMIT SOLUTION` (these two buttons do the exact same thing. The latter simply exists next to the comments field for convenience purposes). Add a comment in the comments text box below if you believe the result is not entirely correct and could be improved in some way. An example for such a 'found, but ...' situation would be the placement / priority in the list. Make sure you add the comment before marking the search result as correct.

Should the results not contain the desired place, you can select `ENTRY NOT PRESENT`. If you wish to add a comment, do so before clicking on `ENTRY NOT PRESENT`.
