Mapping the Ciclovía of Bogotá

Rationale

Ciclovías is a concept invented in Bogota in the 70s, that aims to block some city's main highways, preventing cars and other motorized traffic while only allowing bicycles and pedestrians. These events occur on Sunday mornings, and on Public Holidays, from 7 am to 2 pm.

Normal motorized traffic must be re-routed during these times creating many restrictions and detours. This implies that highways change some of their characteristics, which is translated into an attributes change (oneway, turn restriction, etc) in OSM.

The purpose of this project is to map all these restrictions, allowing applications to offer better routing alternatives.

Community Consultation

We have notified the local community (Colombia) that we were attempting to do this project. The notification was done via Telegram, as well as by the Colombian mailing list.

We also defined all possible cases, and received feedback for them. At the same time, we invited the community to participate with a defined procedure.

Hashtag

We were using the following hashtag for all our commits: #CicloviaBogota

We also used as part of the source value the following link: https://bit.ly/cicloviaWiki

Timeframe

We expect to finish this activity within the following 3 months, once we start mapping the ciclovías. This means we will be working from February to April 2022.

Previously, we took thousands of photos and uploaded them onto Mapillary, as well as we took several GPX traces. We have already defined the mapping strategy to edit on the map, as it is described on the project page.

Update 2022-08-08: The project finally finished on this date.

Tools and Data Sources

For this activity, it is essential to use Mapillary, especially with 360 photos that were taken during the ciclovía.

We will be editing the map using JOSM to easily download the already mapped Ciclovía sections, then adding the required missing details.

Participants

This is the list of people mapping in this project:

For this activity, there are several members of the Kaart team that will be helping us.

Measuring our Success

We have the detailed page of the project, and we have a table with all ciclovía segments. We will modify this table to show the progress of the project.

We have prepared some Overpass turbo queries to validate the mapping once finished:

Also, the routing system should work correctly during Ciclovía (the detours) and off of the Ciclovía time.

To ensure the ciclovías remains correctly mapped on the database, we periodically check the segments and the relations with https://github.com/MaptimeBogota/OSM-elements-change-tracker to validate the changes on the associated elements.

Training/Instructions

We are holding virtual events on Saturday mornings to map the ciclovías. They are announced at Meetup.

One of the purposes of this activity is to work in the already established group, but also it allows new members to join in the mapping project.

As stated before, the detailed description is at Colombia/Project-Ciclovías.

Post-Event Clean Up

If the ciclovía is ever expanded, the new segments will need to be added in; first as part of the relations, then with the appropriated tags for the segments.

We are already aware that 2 Ciclovías are being defined at the South of the city.

Results

Once all the Ciclovías segments will be mapped, we will share this with the community. We believe this may be an attractive project for other cities that have also already implemented the ciclovía concept.

We will share the progress by posting on different channels once a month. And we will create a final report once the project is done.
