A series reactor (421-01-02) is a coil, or a set of coils depending on amount of phases to compensate in an alternative current system and is inserted in series in a power line or in a power substation bay as to:

  • Limit the fault current in case of incident;
  • Adjust the load balancing between several circuits;
  • Smooth alternative voltage in HVDC converters.

It differs from shunt_reactor as it is inserted in series in a power line which means one coil's end is connected to one power line part and the other end sees the substation's bay or another part of the same power line.
A fuse, connected in parallel of the coil may protect it from abnormal electrical currents.

They are mainly found in substations.

How to map

First of all, please refer to general guidelines on power=compensator.

A series reactor may be composed of several independent devices, called a set, serving each phase of a multi-phase power line.
In such situations, it is possible to map the set of reactors on a single node and adding cables=*, just like power=switch.
It is also possible to use as many nodes as cables and connect them accordingly.

Some switches allows to bypass them when necessary and a parallel fuse protect the coils.
