My main interst is railways in the Pacific Northwest of North America, and in particular the CN (ex BC Rail) line to northern British Columbia.

Questions I have regarding the current (Jan 2024) state of OpenRailwayMap:

  • Presentation of Main Track
    • The convention of using the subdivision for the name=* is not very helpful when one is not familiar with the area and there are multiple railways. Ideally the presentation layer should be changed to show the operator when zoomed out, the operator and subdivision as one zoomes in, the subdivision (and route=railway relation) as one zooms in further, and the the track number (and route=railway relation) when zoomed in to high details. This likely requires region-specific presentation.
    • A potential work-around for the zoomed-out presentation is to set ref=* to the railway (reporting mark).
  • Timetable Locations that are not Stations, Junctions, Crossover or Yard
    • There currently is no convention for timetable locations that do not have any specific function.
    • I have been using railway=site for this.
  • Search on OpenRailwayMap (What)
    • It appears that not all nodes with railway=* are included in the search. railway=site is not. I think sites should be included.
    • An alternative would be to tag timetable locations with railway=service_station, even though they do not serve any specific service function.
  • Search on OpenRailwyMap (How)
    • I think search should support tags to scope the results. For example I may want to search for a location of a specific operator, or within a region / country. Or I may want to search for a type of object that is not in the default search.
